The instrumentation for Mozart’s Eine kleine Nachtmusik can be either a small string orchestra or a string quartet with a double bass. Agbekor music on the other hand has a very different instrumentation. The percussion is very varied and different from Western music: a double bell, gourd rattle and four single-headed drums are used. There is a large chorus of men and women singing. Differences in performance areas can be noted too: Mozart is often played in concert halls or at the time in royal lounges while Agbekor music is often played outside in wide areas with space to dance. This choice of lieu is mostly a reflection of the socio-economical position of the musicians and the listeners but also perhaps a desired effect in the music.
